Let’s pick up our story with Abram. He returns from his victory and is greeted by the King of Sodom. But here is where I think the story becomes fascinating. Listen in: 

Genesis 14: 18-20 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, 

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,

   Creator of heaven and earth.

And blessed be God Most High,

    who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

 

Here are some of my thoughts: First isn’t it fascinating that we remember the death and resurrection of Christ through communion by receiving bread and the wine??? So interesting. Also, Abram knew this King and knew what to do with him. He gave him a tenth of everything. 

Why is that do you think? 

Who is this King Melchizedek? 

He is a King and a priest of God Most High. Don’t lose the significance of this fact. Paul gives us another look at this King in Hebrews 7: 

Melchizedek the Priest

This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever. 

Okay, this gets weird here. Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning or end of life, resembling the Son of God. 

What do we do with this? I have searched my Bible commentaries and read a ton of stuff this past week to wrap my head around this King. Some believe Melchizedek was the preincarnate Christ. Some believe he was the first King of Jerusalem. But I ask you to go with me here and let’s just look at the scriptures. 

He was a king of peace, of righteousness and Abram knew him and knew his authority over the land (Kingdom) and offered him a tithe. My thoughts are that this was a King/Priest of God Most High. A King that represented God’s Kingdom…… here on earth…. 

God’s Kingdom here on earth. 

God’s Kingdom come to earth. 

I believe God delivered His authority, his word, his will through this Kingly Priest -Melchizedek. At the beginning of time the Kingdom of God was here upon earth. Through this High Priest God’s power and presence was on earth and God did great things through people, people who were trained in the ways of the Lord. People who prayed and worshiped El. 

Could it be that King Melchizedek was actually a heavenly priest? Something to ponder? 

Okay, recap. The first established High Priest was Melchizedek. The next priestly line was established through Aaron and his sons, a Levitical Priesthood. 

Read this from one commentary:

The writer of Hebrews made several references in chapters 5-7 to Jesus’ priesthood being of the “order of Melchizedek” as opposed to Levitical in nature. The author of Hebrews cited Ps. 110:4. For the writer of Hebrews, only Jesus, whose life could not be destroyed by death, fit the psalmist’s description of a priest of “the order of Melchizedek.” ~Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary. 

So what happened? God’s Kingdom on earth disappears. Do you know how and why? 

Oh, the plot thickens. And each piece of the story absolutely has everything to do with us today. We must press on in this journey to see the puzzle pieces come together. 

My question today. Who in the heck was King Melchizedek? Read Ps. 110:4 and then Hebrews 7:1-10. Share your thoughts. Remember in this place there is no judgment, only love. If you disagree, please do so in love as we travel to the end of this journey.

    Personally (my take which I always feel my path is a windy one and leaves people looking at me ??? so I apologize now) everything I read in description for King Melchizedek points directly to Jesus! I may be straying off course here but these passages through this study this morning are what popped out for me personally.
    Hebrews 3:7-10, 15
    I’ve always wondered how the Hebrew people after seeing so many miracles God did for them through their desert years could question Him in ANY way yet I myself do the same. Even though not experiencing drastic situations as literally wandering in a desert I have to stop and reflect on HOW God has worked in my life. I think as each one of us follows this study we are going to see just how God is speaking to each of us in a personal way through our personal desert.
    Hebrews 3:10 – “their hearts were always looking somewhere else instead of up to me, and they never found the paths I wanted them to follow.”
    So my thought is King Melchizedek is Christ Himself.
    …and then I read Hebrews 5:11-16. <>< "whew!" Exciting!

    Fascinating! For me it’s logical that Jesus not be associated with the Arronic priesthood only because the Levitical priests were man and law based. Christ needs to be associated with a higher priesthood. I’m so looking forward to hearing more! 🙂

    Hmmm, to be completely honest, I am a little lost with this one. So I don’t really have anything to add to this. The only thing I can think of is that King Melchizedek (whew!) is very in much in tune with God and that’s a pretty obvious observation. I am excited to learn more!

    I’m a bit lost as well, but intrigued. I can tell we are on the edge of something here…and this is how I’ve been feeling in my personal life lately, so I’m very excited to see where we are going.

    This is a tough one and I’m not sure where to go with it. I have a Student Bible, New International Version and there are little inserts and insight pages. This is what is says about in Hebrews 7:
    “7:1 Who is Melchizedek? This mysterious person appears in only two places in the Old Testament: Genesis 14 and Psalm 110. Although a Gentile, Melchizedek worshipped the true God. In addition to being a priest, he was also a king. (The Jews would never have permitted such dual office-holding.) Hebres demonstrates that the priesthood of Melchizedek was superior to that of Aaron; but both of them were exceeded by the great high priest, Jesus himself. Because he is both priest and king, Jesus is “in the order of” Melchizedek.”
    There is an insight peice in my bible that talk about the 12th man. Texas A&M football has had a series of 12th men that have come forward to help the football team. Players that come from the student body that are not neccessisarily on the team. Out of nowhere so to speak. Sometimes help comes from what seems like nowhere. Maybe this is similar?

    This is a tough one. Although it does seem to point that this King is Jesus, I’m hesitant to decide that due to lack of information. So for now, I’m thinking maybe he was a heavenly being/angel? Chosen to represent a facet of Jesus as High Priest. God is always giving us hints of what is to come, like when Abraham was off on the mountain about to sacrifice Isaac, and instead God provided the sacrifice…God provided the sacrifice…God gave his only Son as a sacrifice for us. So thats what I am thinking at the very least it is a representation of Christ.

    My friends,
    Some great insight and discussion in the comments today. There are some truly fascinating passages in God’s Word. I struggle at times to remember that these are not characters in a story but real people.
    These are people who are mentioned in God’s Word that we are to learn from. I can’t wait as we travel a little farther along and get a glimpse at some more people whom God loves.

    I believe He is an angel from Heaven in human form & a representative of Christ who was to come centuries later. I am interested in the next entry on Friday.

    After much contemplation in these passages, I and my sister, have formed a opinion of sorts about King Melchizedek. He is a King and a priest, which is unheard of in this time. Arronic priesthood is a man made/formed linage and since Jesus is not of man but of God, He most certainly could not have been put in this linage. We were discussing that perhaps King Melchizedek was laying foundation for a priesthood line for Jesus. Because this King had no geneology, no beginning, no end, he must be from the Most High God and served a purpose to bring God’s will and kingdom upon earth before Jesus could bring it himself.
    Not sure that this is correct, I feel like I am on the brink of realizing something great, but not quite there. An exciting flutter is in my core and I cannot wait to figure it out! 🙂

    Jennifer,
    I LOVE this. I was talking to Dineen a few days ago. I told her that this
    study is one where I hope it compels our community to crack open their Bible
    and to have real intense thoughts and prayers and discussion on these
    passages.
    So when your comment arrived, I was filled up. I'm thrilled that you have
    been thinking upon all this and talking about it with your sister. Neat…
