Because they were written by King David, I want to explain why I believe they are filled with mysteries to be unraveled by God’s people. We need to understand who David was.
Let’s begin with David's childhood. He was a boy born into a large family. He is portrayed as a Shepherd who worked out in the fields. David began with no status, position or money. It’s generally accepted among the theologians that he was an illegitimate son, likely from an affair of his father.
Because of this illegitimacy, David was shunned by his brothers. And this is why he was likely assigned to tend the sheep in the distant pastures, away from his family, and away from his brothers who hated and disrespected him.
However, as David sat alone in the fields, year-upon-year, he learned to hear God’s voice. There were no distractions. There wasn’t a cell phone or media, no one came to visit, he didn’t have anything to distract him, but the sheep. And most of the time the sheep were peaceful and grazing.
So, David sat day upon day, night upon night, month upon month to the years, listening to the voice of God. Pondering the stars. Imagining the ways of God. Thinking about how God thought. Seeing God as he rode upon a cherub. (Psalm 18:10)
Can you imagine what David and God would talk about? Much of David starlight musing is recorded within the psalms. David heard God!!!! (Psalms 40:6, my ears you have opened.)
David’s character is being developed as a son of God during this time. His truth, beliefs, and understanding of who God is, and who David is leading him to a faith and belief that is dauntless and fearless. Remember, David approached Goliath, saying, "You dare to defy the armies of the living God?"
David is the example of what God has designed for every person. a king to rule, reign, and judge. (Will we not judge the angels. 1 Corinthians 6:3)
Within the Psalms we discover this amazing relationship between the King and his son. It’s raw and vulnerable and honest. There are times I think King David was bipolar. As his emotions are recorded as very low and then exceedingly high. How much are we like David?
There’s great wisdom to uncover here and it’s a joy to teach you how to do this if you don’t know and I also look forward to learning from you, what you have uncovered about the psalms specifically in the word of God.
Q: So, what is your opinion of David and his writings in the Psalms?
