Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and passed them out to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate until they were full.

Christ models praying before a meal in this passage of scripture He is offering thanks to God. Prayer at the dinner table in the home of a spiritually mismatched couple can be complex. Prayer before dinner can create a tangible tension or even a flash point for an argument. So how can a believer follow the example of Christ without launching WWIII in the home?

I have a few practical suggestions that I will offer in tomorrow’s blog. I would like to hear how your family handles this time of the day. Please offer your comments.

    We’ve fallen into a steady pattern of my youngest daughter (she’s 12) saying a blessing. Short and simple, “God is great, God is good…” I think for hubby, seeing it was important to his daughter made it okay with him. It is hard though when we are with other Christian couples for a BBQ or something, but I think I’m the one being uncomfortable for him. LOL! He never seems to mind, and he nevers says anything to make me think he does.

    We are an on the go family, but the nights that we do sit at the dinner table together, we pray before our meal. Both my daughters say a prayer and we all hold hands. If a friend is visiting for dinner, we tell them that we pray before dinner and ask if they would like to join us (holding hands), they usually don’t offer up a verbal prayer. We make it all matter-of-factly, and it doesn’t seem to ever be uncomfortable. Perhaps you ask your spouse to just show unity with your family by holding hands, they don’t have to offer a verbal prayer.
