Don’t Save Your Spouse….

Over the past couple of days I have had a little trip down memory lane. I am wondering if you would also travel down this lane with me. I have posted in months prior about my feeble attempts to save my husband. As if Jesus needed my help, thank you very much.

I have tried all kinds of loony things to get my man to become a Christian. Really stupid stuff like:

  • Strategically placing 3×5 cards containing scripture verses around the house. Near the kitchen sink. On the table near the television. How about in the bathroom… Sheesh, the poor guy had no privacy.

  • How about this one: Coercing, manipulating and pressuring him to go to church with me. For the kid’s sake, for my sake, for the dog’s sake……for heaven sake!

  • Pressuring him to attend a “couples” function. This always went over like a lead balloon.

    I realize as believers we can’t help ourselves. Our hearts are in the right place as we try to point our mate to Christ but my experience over the long haul is this: I was the stumbling block in my husband’s journey. I am so glad Jesus finally became fed up and pushed me out of His way. Seeds were sown and now I wait and pray expectantly!

    I would love to hear your stories from your trip down this particular memory lane. What loony things have you done to try to win your spouse to Christ?

      My husband is a Christian, but he is very private about his relationship with Christ. He believes prayer should be a private conversation, not something said aloud. As he put it “If I’m talking with you about something personal, I don’t ask others to come around and listen in”. I am more open and would love to have family devotionals and prayer time. When our children were little, I bought devotion books geared toward young children, and I would hand them to one of the kids and say “Go ask Daddy to read to you”. I usually got the look that says I’ve crossed the line again. I have since backed off. As you said, it’s not like Jesus needs my help.

      Before my husband came back to Church I would almost be mean about it. I’d ask him, “Do you want to go to Church today?” And when he would say no, I would huff and puff around the house bitterly and inadvertantly take it out on him. I backed off, and now he goes every Sunday with me, and we even teach Sunday School together now.

      I remember when something worked out that was clearly God’s hand to me, I would say something like, “Isn’t that cool how God worked that out?” Hubby told me to quit saying that. 🙂

      Boy oh boy… For the first and probably only time in my life I kept my big mouth shut. I’m a Type A so as you can imagine it’s hard to not be the “one” forcing things into action. Instead, just letting God work. That He did! My husband was saved just last July after 3 years of marriage. Now getting him to pursue after the Lords will for his life is the next prayer i long to see answered. It’s hard not to try to step in and attempt to correct your spouses way of thinking. I think about everyday i feel but in the next breath i feel the Lord keeping me at peace with trusting in Him to do the interal work.
      Maybe you girls have talked about this before but i could use some insight into how to not get bummed when your “outta the boat” but your hubbies snoring away in it! I struggle with not trying to let satan pull me off track because i’m positioning myself to be used by the Lord and begging for a God sized mission but then your looking for support and the spouse is miles behind you spiritually. I feel like i’m somehow held back. Does anyone out there know what i’m talking about??!!

      I am blessed to be married to the man I am married to. No, he doesn’t attend church with the family, but he works six days a week to support us. He attends every function the kids have at church and at school. He moved to Washington because I wanted to move and now I can’t find a job he is carrying a heavy burden. I learned many years ago to not to try to save him. We much love our spouses and the Lord will do the rest!

      Hey Lynn, I know what you’re talking about. I still think I can help my husband grow faster spiritually. Every time I try things end up in a mess. So I pray that God helps me stay out of it and let him have it.
