Messy and Broken Could Be The Best Place To Be

In a rare moment, this morning at church at the request of our Pastor, I went to the front of the church to be available to pray with anyone who needs prayer. I’ve never done this before and wouldn’t you just know God KNEW there was one woman, a wife, who needed me, whom I could so relate. As I looking into her face, I could see a not-so-distant reflection of me only a few years ago. 

She was struggling in her marriage. 

My heart is broken for her. 

My heart is truly broken for all of our messy marriages. 

I am broken for those of us who are married and yet lonely, who are sad, angry, disappointed. My heart breaks for us who are isolated even at church because we don’t fit the typical church family shape. My heart hurts for those of us who are desperate to share intimacy with our spouse and to know a marriage where Christ is the center and not ridiculed by the very person who was supposed to be our soul mate. 

My heart is broken. But….. (With God there is always a but.) 

My sweet friends it’s when we are broken that God can do His best work. It’s when we have finally reached a place that we just can’t do “it” anymore. That is when we finally surrender our pain, our expectations, our marriage, and our spouse’s salvation to an all-powerful and good God. 

I am an ordinary woman. A 5’4″ blonde who doesn’t have this walk with God all figured out. I don’t have all the answers but I have one thing and it’s all I need. 

I have Jesus. 

I love Jesus with every part of me. And Jesus loves me. And that is the simple key to living in peace and to loving my nonbeliever. The transforming love of Christ and His Word has changed everything. 

My friends, you CAN do this messy marriage thing. You can thrive in your spiritual mismatch. You can raise Godly kids in the midst of different world views. You can laugh, OUT LOUD with praises on your lips. You can experience peace that surpasses all understanding. You can love profoundly and with passion. 

Dineen and I are ordinary wives but we serve the Extraordinary God of the Universe and His son, Jesus. And our marriages have been redeemed, our kids are safe in our Savior’s hands and we are on the most amazing journey any believer could hope to travel. 

Oh please, travel this crazy, mixed up road with us. Learn to hear the Father’s voice. Watch as He astonished you with unexpected and fantastic answers to prayer. Let Him comfort you and teach you new ways to live. 

Walk with us and behold…… His desires for your life will be the greatest thing you will ever experience. 

Psalms 37:4 Delight yourself in the Lord 
and He will give you the desires of your heart. 

I bear witness to the truth of God’s Word.

Take a step forward in your walk toward heaven and watch all that our Great God will do in you, around you and allow him to amaze you this very week.

    Hi Lynn;
    My name is also Lynn and I just finished listening to you and Dineen on Focus on the Family. Wow!! I was so thrilled to hear someone actually talking about this subject finally!! I have downloaded your book “Winning Him Without Words” and have just finished the introduction and here I am. I want to say Thank You…..I was asking the Lord what He wanted from me today and my Mom called to ask if I was listening to the radio. I usually always listen to Focus on the Family and James McDonald every morning, however, I listened to something James McDonald was preaching about and I found what he was talking about was not agreeing with what I understood the Bible to be saying, so unfortunately, I have not been listening as much as I feel I don’t want to be listening to things that might not be of God. I am so afraid of listening to things that might hurt me spiritually. When my Mom told me what was on this morning though, I just had to listen and I am so glad that I did. Again, thank you for your words of encouragement and I would like to ask you for prayer for my unsaved family. My husband’s name is Paul and my daughter’ s names are Vanessa and Deanna. Vanessa, my oldest is 30 yrs old and told me that she accepted Christ as her Savior about three months ago but is not walking or reading her Bible or attending a Church

    My youngest daughter Deanna, is in California at University and has told us that she is gay and does not want to hear anything about God or my walk with Him. My husband is such a good, kind, loving person, hoever, being forced to go to Church until he was 15 yrs old has turned him from Church of any kind. He will attend on special occasions like Easter and Christmas, however, will not attend regular services as he does not like my Pastor. It is a hard walk for me, however, I will NOT give up. I fully trust in my Jesus and His Almighty love. Thank you for your prayers and your continuing help for those of us who are living with non-believers. May God bless you both abundantly as you continue this journey of serving the Lord so faithfully.

    Wow – how awesome that this woman found YOU!!! It blows my mind how God knows just exactly what and who we need to help us get on track!!     doubt that God can and will work His love and purposes through you. Just ask
    Him what is your part, then do it. He will do His and then watch what

    Thank you Lord,
    I am so overwhelmed, this book and this ministry has answered my prayers. This morning I was on my way to work and I just so happened to hear the 1st 5 minutes of the session and I was like, Im going to miss the message but then you said the website address and I thought ha! as soon as I can, Ill log on and see what I can find. I am the woman in the messy marriage and God has answered so many prayers for guidance and direction and to give me the tools to make my marriage work and still be a faithful follower. I am as you call it a “spiritual Baby” Ive only been saved for a few years and I’m still growing in my faith, but more than anything I struggle with the effect my marriage has on my faith and the effect my faith has on my marriage and it should be an amazing journey not a struggle. So I thank you from the bottom of my heart for leading me to this book and this site and for answered prayer and for making me feel like I’m no longer a lone in this struggle that I cant talk to anyone about. So Thank you again and May God continue to bless you and this ministry.

    Lynn, Thank you for this post. As much as I try to put what I’ve learned into practice, Sundays are usuallly hard. The going to church alone amidst all the couples. And also, I don’t know if it’s the Holy Spirit’s conviction or something more sinister at work (I suspect the latter) but my husband is always in the foulest mood on Sundays. I tried yesterday to be cheerful and ignore it and keep the thermostat in our home on “happy” but it makes me sad inside. I needed this particular post today! Very very encouraging!
    “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12
    An important thing to remember: my struggle is not against my husband (flesh and blood)! 🙂

    What an inspiration you ladies are! I’m a believer( I have been since a child) but my husband is not. I was one of those women who knew I could change my husband’s views and win him over to Christ! Ha! Needless to say my prideful and injudicious ways didn’t work.
    Hearing you guys on FOTF this morning gave me hope and reminded that we serve an amazing God that has everything planned out. Like one of you ladies said this morning, “God does NOT need our help” That simple phrase convicted and humbled me at the same time!
    I just wanted to say thanks for being obedient to God and giving a woman like me hope!

I just listened to part 1, and it was so uplifting and comforting to listen to two women who know EXACTLY what I go through and how I feel as the wife of an unbeliever.     Oh amen, Brenda! You said it perfectly: “my struggle is not against my husband!” That is hard to remember when they are not very loving toward us but the spiritual battle going on around us is intense! We are fighting on the front lines. This is a huge revelation we all need to understand AND remember when we are so tempted to retreat or lash out at our unbelieving spouse.     I wanted to thank you both for your message this morning on FOTF. My husband and I are 28 and have been married for about a year and half. I too was brought up in loving, Christian household, but after my parents divorce I thought I knew my direction better than God and left in search of my own destiny. I met a boy who I fell head over heels for – young love, but knew deep down he wasn’t for me. He told adamantly for over 5 years that he wanted nothing to do with church or with God. Even though I was not in church at the time, I knew inside that I could never say no to God forever. I felt battered and bruised after that relationship. Until I met my now husband. He had a completely different heart than my ex. He was kind and thoughtful and we quickly became friends. We both helped each other through our breakups and eventually grew to love one another. It was like a breath of fresh air. I knew he was not a Christian, but his heart said otherwise. Once we married, I started to feel like I still didn’t have the direction that I needed. I spoke to my husband about my anxieties and we both agreed that I should give church a chance again. I have been back in a church setting for about a year and my life has been truly blessed in so many ways since then. Due to moves, I am still trying to find a home church base to settled in, but I have faith that God will lead us both in the right direction. My husband does not go to church with me, but is accepting of the fact that to do go. I feel lonely when I’m there and have prayed many times for my husbands salvation, including yesterday. I prayed once again after service yesterday in my car and asked for His guidance. I left a little later for work today and caught FOTF in its entirety. I cried all the way to work. I believe the message you both delivered today was God’s way of telling me that there is always hope and that I am never alone with Him. Thank you for sharing your story!

    Could I please ask for patience and wisdom in the challenging times with my non believing husband? I am not a good debater (which is always the way conversations seem to go…debates) When it comes to defending my faith I just know what I know but wish I could say something that would spark an interest to investigate. Even just a little! I’m not good at vocalizing all that I know about Jesus but I can paint so someday soon I’m going to use this gift from God and preach through my paintings!     Oh Juliane,
    My sweet friend. I can just feel that heart wrenching longing in you for your husband to be part of your spiritual and church life. Boy howdy, do I ever “get” it.
    My sweet friend, you keep doing what you are doing. Lean into Jesus and give Him your tears. He sees your heart and one day your husband will see the love of Christ in you.
    It does get easier. You can do this. Jesus will walk every step with you.
    Please know I’m praying now that your husband is overcome by the holy Spirit and he begins to crave all things Jesus, church and a marriage built on faith. You pray to that end as well. God is faithful and during the waiting you will discover some pretty amazing things about Christ and His faithfulness and love.

    Have I lived where you are at. My husband used to ask me so many difficult questions and I struggled to answer and honestly never answered very well. I finally decieded I wasn’t ever going to convince my husband with facts. It would be the love of Christ in me. That’s the best I can do. It’s the best all of us can do.

    Just finished listening to Focus interview in the studio here. Wonderful testimonies. I smiled to myself thinking “I actually KNOW these gals! They’re my sisters now!” 🙂 The biggest lesson that God gave me tonight in listening was…”let go and let Him win my husband over!” I almost feel a weight lifting in just typing this!? WOW!     Hi Ladies! I know it was God who brought you into FOTF at this time. I praise Him for what He is doing in your lives. Please pray for us. I really feel hopeless and alone in a marriage where there is no communication; The last 8yrs. have been a struggle to say the least. I live with someone whose heart is made of stone and it hurts, because now I am so tired, I don’t want to try anymore. I don’t feel any love for him anymore; this may be where God wants me and I am willing to do what He asks me, but I feel like I’ve been waiting forever.

    I didn’t even know about this website until I heard you on Focus on the Family today. I feel like my marriage has deteriorated due to the “mis-match” and now after hearing you, I realize there is hope for me and my husband to be able to have a good marriage in the midst of not having the same faith/belief systems. I plan on ordering your book so I can learn more and be the wife I need to be to him (and mother to our kids). This is seriously a life-line and I am so glad I am not alone in this. I feel like I have no one at my church that I can relate to in this area. Thanks so much for speaking out on this; and please do pray for us.

    I pray at least twice daily for my husband to open his heart to the Lord and to let go of some bad habits like drink. He is currently dealing with a health issue. The doctor told him to cut back on drinking. It got his attention for a couple of days, although the weekend was a problem. I believe God is using this situation to seend a message to my husband. I pray that his heart becomes open. I pray that I support him well during this time.

    hey kelly…i just wnted to share a thought: sometimes the amazingness is found dead smack in the middle of the struggle. the hard place can be a great breeding ground for intimacy with God and spiritual blessing. be encouraged. i’ll b praying.

    I a so grateful to God for your ministry. Thank you for your surrender to Him and for modeling faith, hope and love.
    I love my husband Matt. Please pray over Ps. 46:10 HCSB, “Stop your fighting, and know that I am God.” Frustrations in his life are mounting. His job is not going as well as usual. His children are longing for a deeper relationship with him. He sees it everywhere. Please pray he will connect this all to his lack of God in his life. I have so much hope that his salvation is coming. He is becoming humbled. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” I can see the Holy Spirit working. It’s coming. I praise God.     Thanks so much to both of you!!! You provide such hope and inspiration to my aching heart! I long to be able to do something to “fix” my husband but as you both so lovingly point out its God’s job and he sure can do it without my help!! He pointed that out to me on Sunday in a powerful way and than today again as I listened to your broadcast. Think He’s trying to tell me something! 🙂 What HE keeps impressing on me is to keep Praising HIM ! Praise HIM through the storm and He can move mountains through my praise!!

    Lynn & the community, when I discovered the book and this website, my husband was not coming to church with me. God led me to Psalm 91 which became my weapon of defense against the enemy when I didn’t know what to do, say or how to pray. Each Sunday morning was torture and torment, until I started to read and meditate on Psalm 91 and praying that God give me grace and favor with my husband. I focused only praying for him and found the strength by God’s grace release his being saved to God. It was when I started focusing on making me faith stronger that I saw a dramatic change. Before it got better, it got worse. The enemy worked through him to push for divorce. At that point, I knew it was an attack because I grew stronger in my faith. Hope this blesses someone.

    I personally am going to say more prayers that include the SUM of us all here in rereading more comments. To those who especially commented on feeling alone at church, which really sounds like an oxymoron but nevertheless a fact…I think of you now while alone in my pew! The most frustrating for me is not being able to share openly when God works in my life. Sometimes I just want to BURST with excitement and give Him glory in sharing with my husband but I hate seeing the eye rolls which diminishes the wonder of it all so I find myself now containing my excitement and news from him. Inhale, exhale, let go and let HIM! <>< In the words of Tiny Tim.. "God bless everyone!" You HAVE to keep your sense of humour and a smile :)

Please pray that the power of the Holy Spirit will move in my husband, Preston’s, life to bring him into a right relationship with Him and in our marriage to bring us into a right relationship with each other and back to our one-flesh covenant marriage!     Thank you everyone for your stories, comments and encouragement every day. This is where I go when I feel I can’t do it anymore. This post/comments made me cry in the coffee shop. I have no one else at my church in my situation and I am lonely but I do have Jesus. I struggle daily with my husband’s hostility. He treats me like I am a complete idiot in all matters since I became a follower ten years ago. I have little credibility and it gets to me. Pride of course! So much warfare in my home. My flesh wants to leave him but I won’t. Thank you, community of SUM women! I need you and I need this!

Please pray that the power of the Holy Spirit will move in my husband, Preston’s, life to bring him into a right relationship with Him and in our marriage to bring us into a right relationship with each other and back to our one-flesh covenant marriage!     pray for my marriage restoration, my husband left , and also pray for his salvation, to know the lord and go to him, and also for healing for my parents from head to toe,they are in constant pain, for my mother in law who has breastcancer, for 2 friends who are fighting brain tumors in the heads and another friend who has cancer as well she is 27 years of age,complete healing restoration for them and for friends of mine ,who are waiting for their spouses to go home for their marriage to be fully restored in jesus name , for financial freedom to pay all our debts ,,, for my son to have positive friends around him for god to guide him and protect him,he just started high school and attitude came with it for god to show me to be a good mom and wife ,, i need gods guidance in every aspect of my life ,,,,, and to go forward in life ,we live stress by stress each day ,,,,, to our heavenly father , we thank you and are grateful in return,,,, mary dear lord show me your way ,,, please pray for my husband returns home,also please pray i lied to a very good friend i really do not know why,i am truly sorry and asked to god for his forgiveness ,a now hoping my good friend will find it in her heart to forgive me,, i pray for restoration of friendship in jesus name…. thank you ————–mary

    Life can seem so overwhelming my sister. But God has it all in His hand. I
    will join you in prayer for your life, your marriage, salvation of your
    husband. Your MIL and your kids, Wow, so much happening in your life.
    Mary, as I bring you before the Lord, I'm sensing that a time of fasting is
    needed. Perhaps a day time fast. You can read about that kind of fast in our
    archives. There are strongholds to be broken and fasting and prayer are
    needed.

    I thought I had posted on here but guess not, for I don’t see my comment. Anyway, I so appreciate Dineen and Lynn !! You are a wonderful blessing ! I have been blessed with supportive friends and family BUT I love how you both can know EXACTLY what I’m going through, you’ve and are walking in my shoes. And many of others here too! Thanks you for staring this group ! It is needed !
    To Brenda, I just want to offer encouragement about Sundays. My husband does not get in a foul mood, BUT trying to get out the door Sunday mornings, tends to always be a struggle and I run late ! Either the girls are fighting or etc. or I want to stay in the cozy bed with my husband as he drapes his arm around me ! It is hard, but I want to tell you that God sees your faithfulness and He is smiling!! Many times I put that image in my head and the image of the devil stomping his foot, cause he did not keep me in bed!

    Lynn and Dineen,
    I am so thankful that the two of you obeyed God’s calling for this special ministry…You have touched so many lives – Including my own…Please pray for me as I struggle to love my husband and my step-son the way God loves them…I find it really hard and not get upset at the ungodly things…i.e…taking a spoon from a restaurant…I have anxiety issues to begin with…so this just adds to it…I constantly remind myself that I am not any better and God had alot of patience to bring me back to himself…I am trusting that through the way I handle my anxiety this will bring honour to God and my husband will see that it is God that heals, not man! I love your book, I am part way through…
