Trade in Your Yoke

My friends, as Lynn shared on Monday, Abba so overwhelmed us that last day at the conference. For the spiritually mismatched to be called out and recognized in this way…

My friends, as Lynn shared on Monday, Abba so overwhelmed us that last day at the conference. For the spiritually mismatched to be called out and recognized in this way was deeply humbling and amazing! It brought me to tears as my heart burst for all of us here. And to be prayed for like this, ALL of us, was as if the very heavens had opened up and Jesus' light shined on every one of us.

After Stacey's prayer and another man began to pray over us and he spoke of Jesus' yoke. I heard his words, but it was Jesus' heart that spoke the loudest in my mind at that moment. This is what I heard:

"It is time for you to exchange your unequal yoke for My yoke."

Then on Monday morning, I spent a long time in prayer with my journal open and my pen in hand, seeking Jesus for more understanding of what He wanted us to know and understand. I asked Him to share His heart. This is what I heard:

"The time for striving in prayers is over. Now is the time to rest in trust in Me. I have heard every prayer and seen every tear. Trust Me. Rest in My unending love that extends not just to you but to your spouse too. Just as I have held you in My hand, I hold them as well. Trust, trust, trust Me. Now more than ever."

SUMites, I asked The Lord to help me understand what He meant about the striving in prayers to be over. Did He mean to stop praying? And what I got was this strong sense that it was now time to believe what we have asked. We are to speak it as truth over our pre-believers.

Then I went to that verse that we have all heard so many times about Jesus' yoke:

"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." -Matthew 11:29-30

I knew "rest" was a key word here between what I'd heard and this verse so I compared the Greek words used in other places for "rest" and discovered the one used in Matthew is different than the others. This one means to give rest, give intermission from labor, refresh."

Dear friends, I was so blown away at how all the pieces of this fell together. And based upon some of your comments on Monday's post, I believe many of you are hearing the same thing from our great King.

The other key word in this Scripture is learn. So don't worry that you don't quite understand what Jesus is asking us to do. He will teach us. That is His intention here, to teach us about His yoke, but first we have to give Him our unequal yokes.

So do this as a symbolic gesture and pray in your own words something like this:

Jesus, today I am handing you my unequal yoke and all my broken expectations and tears as a result of it. And in it's place, I take your yoke and wear it proudly. Teach me what all this means and show me how to walk forward in my marriage from this day forward NOT as someone who is unequally yoked, but as someone who is EQUALLY YOKED with YOU. In Your Powerful and Mighty Name, Jesus, amen.

I am so excited to see what the future-the near future-holds for all of us, my dear friends. We are on a mighty journey together.

    Teach me what all this means and show me how to walk forward in my marriage from this day forward NOT as someone who is unequally yoked, but as someone who is EQUALLY YOKED with YOU. Amen!!! This resonates so deeply with me. When this is my focus, it gives a whole new perspective on my journey alongside my spouse, changing completely the way I see us as a couple, and our marriage. Thanks for this reminder.

    Wow just what I needed to be reminded of! I have been struggling and been asking the Lord this week to show me what to do, how to pray, how to be that wife He wants me to be. I am struggling with respecting my husband as a person. I hold in high regard integrity and earning a living. These are something my husband has neither of.. some of the struggle is why doesn’t he care enough to take care of me and to keep the promises he makes to me and others. I struggle because my husband claims salvation but has no walk with the Lord. Lord what do I do.. here is the answer. Rest in Him, let Him teach me .. show me how to walk forward in my marriage. and see me as someone who is equally yoked in HIM. Thank you Jesus!!!

    Joy <3 Oh what Joy when we can just TRUST & know that he’s got it all in his hands. He doesn’t intend for us to be weary and labour with our “status” as unequally yoked…he wants us to sit with Him, Love with Him and Shine with Him…Trust and KNOW that we are His Children & that He sees it all, He knows the Future….He’s Already There!

    So many prayers I have been using the “words” (I put that in quotations cuz that was the word I received in our fast) …”Father shine Your light”…NEVER thought He would light up something in MY life personally to see. Just like our Daddy, isn’t it? I have NEVER felt so loved. 🙂 (exhale)

    Let’s keep praying and stop striving. We have the power of The Spirit. We are told to be confident. We are called to live full out, to shine our light. Let’s focus on our blessings and deal with tasks and problems with grace and ease.

    Awesome word! I have been feeling this. We need to get rid of the un’s in our lives. UNqualified, UNcalled, UNequally yoked, etc. I’ve been feeling something else coming too…but I can’t share it yet, just waiting for confirmation. I will tell you it will be a big change for this ministry.

    Allow me to give a personaltestimony that combines Lynn’s prophetic message that the SUM community received at the conference and then Dineen’s post today.
    Several years ago while attending a spiritual warfare conference,the minister said: “Women, how would you like your husband saved, and speak not a word to him but to God. You pray, fast, and do everything you can until his salvation is manifested or you receive a release in your spirit that it is done” I knew that was speaking to me, and I proceeded to do just that until I actually grew tired of doing it, and hungry. One night, I was brought to II Chronicles 20 where Jehoshaphat’s army was going into the battle and God instructed them to go into the battle and praise. I ask the Lord if I was now to just PRAISE Him that the battle had been won?
    The very next morning at a Bible study, a prophetic word came forth with: “This is not a day of fasting, weeping, sack cloth and ashes; it is a day of victory, it is a day of praise. Just like Jephoshaphat went into the battle, did I not send ambushment and the enemy killed themselves. So pick yourself up and rejoice in the Lord”
    I knew that was for me, and I went out and celebrated with friends, EATING and REJOICING. I can tell you that I have never asked again, and yes, the yoke of the burden of his salvation was removed from me. But, just like Abraham, during the time of waiting for the promise of Isaac to be fulfilled, he had to shew away the fowls from eating the covenant promise. (Gen. 15:11) But, I’d rather be shewing fowls away than bearing the heavy yoke of burden that I once felt for my pre-believer.
    Let’s all rejoice together – -He has, indeed, heard our prayers.

    Dineen, thank you for sharing this. It is so awesome. What great hope, love and wisdom The Lord has proud out on you, Lynn and this community. I am humbled and grateful to be part of it. So true I been feeling the tide switching here also. When I read that verse in Matthew which I have read a hundreds of times. This time what popped out for me and spoke to my heart was where “learn from me I am humble and gentle in heart and you will find rest for your soul”. I finally got that ahhh moment what is Jesus he is humble and gentle so what do we need to be in our marriages humble and gentle not only will we find rest in our souls so will our husbands!!!! Thank you for that wounderful,prayer. Love you guys hugs have a great day

    You know what Lynette? I was talking to a friend last night on the phone and as the very words “UNequally” came out of my mouth?…I felt the “chink” (love that word Lynn) in my soul as I “proclaimed” it out loud. OH MAN! We are CHANGING! GOD IS CHANGING THE ATMOSPHERE HERE! (I say this with hands clenched in fists UP in the air!) 😀

I was tested this morning with TWO flat tires on my car after just having the seat belts replaced in our truck $$$ Thank you Herc! :C Without me even TRYING to remain calm it was like the Holy Spirit in me went into automatic pilot as my human emotions started to rise up. Breathe. Focus. Grace delivered!

    AMEN MIRACLE MARTHA! YES! I too FEEL your words here. Unbelievably God has been bringing the scriptures of battles to my attention with the bottom line that WE WIN IN THE END with God. I keep feeling the impression to keep moving. Do not get stuck in something. Do not focus on ONE thing. Bigger picture. More good to be done. This will SHINE Light and open eyes, ears, hearts, souls and minds.

    Martha, I too felt like I was often doing ‘works’ so my husband would get saved. I got weary. I think we all do. A long time ago I heard a sermon about begging God over and over for something. Things is, when our kids ask for something, and we promise it or say yes to them, their words change from “will you, can you, can I” to “I can’t wait for, or I am looking forward to…” I think God is the same way. He has heard our prayers and petitions for so long…He knows…and now we should wait with anticipation.

    Lynette, it is too long of a story to get into here, but when this happened, it was like God placed on me the urgency of fasting and praying for his salvation. Once I got the release that it was done, things at home actually got worse. But, it prepared me for, no matter what I saw, the battle was won, otherwise, I would have been a basket case. (Not saying that I am not a basket case now at times. (lol)

    Oh, I knew what you meant. I was just being reminded that after the promise and peace of his salvation, came the real test of “do I look at what is before me in terms of his behavior change, or do I believe the promise.” Thank God for Aarons in our life who stand with us.

    Trust, believe “it is finished”, persevere, and restoration (in God’s perfect will) will come. God had sent me a message that I needed to finally give him all the pain in my heart…to go to “the place” and let it all go…surrender completely and give Him all I’m still trying to accomplish in my own power through repeated prayers, messages, etc. For more than a week, I didn’t get it. Then last night, I watched a couple talk about their restored marriage on a TV ministry program. There it was…the message again to LET IT GO and to LET GOD take it upon Himself. Knowing and trusting always that it will have to come from God’s own hand, I still was striving in my prayer closet. I completely felt broken and spilled the pain on the living room floor. It just came upon me…WOW! Lynn, you shared with me the word “perseverance” and it has come up too many times to count since! 🙂 In our Bible study, in some scriptures using “perseverance”, The Message translation uses “passionate patience.” Wow, again. Let’s all be freed once and for always from the unequal yoke and only allow Christ’s yoke to fall upon us. AMEN!

    Hubby cringes at the UNequally yoked name. He thinks we believe we are better people. We might be better OFF, but not better people. So… Spiritually UNique marriage? 🙂

    I can’t say I disagree. Unequally yoked is a biblical term though. But I understand how it could affect someone in that way.

    I have been thinking since my original comment. Some of us have been regulars here a long time. Others join us after reading the books or hearing a broadcast. For some, the unequal yoke is a concern in an otherwise healthy relationship. Some marriages bear the weight of addictions, incarceration, or other trauma. Some have just learned that their spouse is a prebeliever and are in shock.
    What I am getting at is that we should be aware of the diverse needs of SUMites. We can all benefit from concentrating on being yoked with The Lord. And also be sensitive to those currently grieving their unequally yoked status in their marriages. For some, the burdens in this world weigh heavy. Our legacy has been one of sharing and support, where others understand the situation. We help bring each other up. I know I have been supported and at other times offered support.
    I am all for moving forward and growing. I also want to reach out SUMites wherever they are on their path.

    The Lord has me on a journey to learn humility. And while for most this verse spoke to taking the Yoke of Jesus upon them, I heard the Lord say, “Lynn, look at me (Jesus), I am gentle and humble in heart. This is your goal.”

    Teresa, you are so right. Everyone’s journey is different because of the circumstances involved, and at different places along the highway. When I think of some of the rough times I have had, I am so thankful that it didn’t include the weight of addictions, incarceration, physical abuse, as you mentioned. I, too, would like to reach out to women wherever they are.

    I too have been hearing from The Lord to let go and trust. And about a week ago I was told by my Heavenly Father that my husbands salvation was not MY burden. It was such a beautiful revelation, I still pray for his salvation and restoration, but it is not my burden. It is Gods.
    Thank you for the prayer, I’m praying it and declaring victory in Jesus name. I don’t know what my victory looks like, but because I know who my father is, I KNOW it will be abundantly Good!!
    Thank you Jesus for your unconditional love for us AND our pre-believers! I am trusting you for restoration – in me, my relationship with You and my marriage!

    I have definitely felt this same leading in my own life, not just w my husband but in general. God has been telling me, why carry all these burdens, you weren’t meant to carry that, my way is easy. I keep having to remind myself but it is getting easier, knowing He’s in control to just let go and rest in Him. And by letting go of those stresses, I am freer to be more patient and gentle in spirit and with my family. My words were serenity, and light. His yoke is light, when I walk WITH Him I can live right out of His arms 🙂 that’s the happiest place to be.

    Unbelievable Teresa!!! I too was thinking this on my drive into work after commenting this morning. The diverse needs of Sumites. The many different stories we each have. That’s why I pray more and more who are silent as they read these comments with their own story will boldly step out and share because as they do?…MORE will come forth. You who are silent and reading?…we need your “WORDS!” YOU are some’s KEY to opening up. God is with you….and there is NO judging here.

    I might have shared this before but God said very clearly to me on day one or two of my fast when I decided to bring my husband to Him and do this for his soul…I heard God say to me: “let Robert go.” I was confused, just as you were dineen…does he want me to stop thinking about him? What does that mean? “Do it for your brother” was the next thing God said to me. And I have let my husband go ever since. Even winning him without words has taken a back set as I just delve into Jesus and His Word, His great gospel and what He did for us on that cross. Surprise, surprise God knows best 😉 I have been freed of taking on the burden of this unequally yolked marriage and have been closely yolked with Our Lord! It has lit a fee in my soul and the Holy Spirit is stirring up something great!

    Great post with all I am living this week…
    The Lord set me free from the burden of my husband’s salvation last summer. Since then, I really felt a heaviness lift off of me that I didn’t even realize I was carrying. This was a result of hearing a pastor say that we can’t live our lives to see just our family saved and also after I feel on 1 Cor 7:13,15 that says:
    “And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace.”
    This all came a few weeks after I told the Lord I was ready for what ever it would take… I literally told HIM that HE could “rock the boat” and that I was READY to face any storm with HIM!! I felt like the Lord was showing me that perhaps a temporary separation was needed.
    Last week the Lord allowed me to watch a webinar with a christian therapist on “emotional abuse”. Out of curiosity, I signed up. Well little did I know what she described was exactly what I had been living.
    After the revelation I had last summer, I realized I had to stop being a people pleaser (yes, this included my husband) and God pleaser at the same time (it just was not working). The Lord told me to please HIM and that HE would take care of my husband. Honestly since last summer, things started to get worse. My husband obviously didn’t have the control over me like he use to and this was bothersome to him. Understand, my husband had told me a few times in the past to leave. He said I am too spiritual. Any way to make a long story short my husband asked me to leave Monday morning (once again) but this time I felt the Lord say “It is time”. God had even sent a sister in the Lord to my hometown and she was staying at a bed and breakfast only 1 min walk from my house. She did not even know what I was going through. She could not understand why the Lord had sent her to my hometown. Well now we know! When Roger kicked me out Monday morning I came to stay with my sister in the Lord,Lita. I have been here since Monday and the Lord already has a place for me to stay after Lita leave. The Lord showed my neighbors’ downstairs apartment. I asked them yesterday and I am pretty sure they are going to let me stay there for next to nothing. This will allow me to stay close to my children…PRAISE GOD!! I can’t tell you the peace I have through this whole ordeal. I really feel the Lord is just really guiding me… HE really prepared for such a time as this… After talking to my kids I found out that the Lord had prepared their hearts too since they both dreamed last week that mom and dad had separated. I know it was the Lord’s doing since he wanted to prepare them for the bomb their dad dropped on them Monday evening. Honestly, the hardest part of this all, was how this would affect my kids but honestly so far they have been amazing. Both my kids (daughter 17 and son 14) are believers and are plugged in at our churches Youth group. Last Sunday they both came to church with me and there was a man there giving his testimony. It was an ex-gang member that ended up in max. security federal prison. This man’s heart was transformed by Jesus. I know that the Lord allowed both of my children to be there Sunday morning to prepare their hearts even more for what happened the next day. I had time individually with both kids after they got the news from their dad. It was all good and we prayed together…GOD IS SO GOOD! I will end here but I just want to say I know that we are to persevere in faith…the battle is not ours, it is HIS!! Now I know all I need to do is keeping PRAISING THE LORD and staying in FAITH while HE works on my family’s situation. The Lord even showed me yesterday that I needed to keep blessing my husband through this all…no resentment, hard feelings or unforgiveness. Thanks SUMites for the positive encouragement… I know that God is in control and honestly this is the best place we can ever be 🙂

    I am just reading this devotion now. I am excited and overwhelmed by what you had to say because one of the words God gave me for the year 2014 is “believe”. Believe as in “I will do exactly what you are praying for me to do.” After praying for 20 years for my husband’s salvation it does seem impossible at times. And the verse He shared with me on Tuesday was: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 I am going to turn in my unequal yoke for God’s yoke. I am not sure what that looks like, but I want to press into Him. God is speaking! Thank you for sharing.

    Teresa, I love how you put that! I am one of those that are new to this group. I’ve only been married for 5 yrs..both of us in our late 50’s and married for the first time. When I married my husband I had been away from the Lord but just crawling back to Him or rather He was running to me with open arms. During that time, I came to realize that my husband has no walk with the Lord. He claims salvation and goes to church but that is all. There is no walk. So I guess it has just been the last 3 yrs of our marriage that have been rough. I didn’t know what it was but then realized we were spiritually unyoked. The Lord led me to this site after reading the book Winning without a word.. and how I praise Him for that. So this is new ground for me.. the Lord is teaching me.. and I am learning how to live in this marriage and be the wife He wants me to be. I’ll be honest though.. I had gone to the Lord in my secret place and begged Him to let me out of this marriage. There are so many issues.. spiritually, financially (my husband is a self employed mechanic but hasn’t had any work for ages and doesn’t seem to care), and the lack of integrity he has (he has made promises to me that he won’t keep and to other people). I have a hard time seeing the good in him! I wanted out but the Lord said NO!! He said, I am your strength. I am your husband, put all your expectations in ME and Me alone. It isn’t easy though. I guess this was the Lord’s leading to share this. This is where I am in the road of the SUMites.

    Dineen, I read this this morning in my email inbox and tears and joy flooded my heart. My word for 2014 is trust and you used it over and over again. God has been showing me his work behind the scenes in my husband’s life during this season of unemployment for him and He’s been telling me over and over again His salvation is coming. I have been laboring in prayer “come, Lord Jesus, come” for weeks now, putting all my hope in Jesus for Matt. Your word is speaking to me to rest and let Jesus do it. He is coming. Praise the Lord!!     Yesterday a friend prayed that I would love me husband. Seeking His direction on that; I don’t know how to live out this verb in our present situation. So yes, Lord Jesus, I want and accept Your yoke!

    I, too, received a similar message regarding my marriage. It was then I felt led to move from praying for my husband to thanking the Lord for his (my husband’s) acceptance of Jesus as his savior. For me, that can be difficult as he has still not accepted Christ. I often forget and fall back to praying for his salvation. This conversation reminds me again to trust God and His timing and to thank Him for what He will work in my husbands life. Thank you for the reminder!

    Yes, I have felt the same leading, don’t get caught up in one thing, keep moving, one day at a time, and SHINE. The light He has given us. 🙂 I still trust Him for what He has promised, but for now I have to move past that and keep reaching out to others with what I do have now!

    God is amazing. He has brought me such support from so many sisters in Christ throughout the world.I have let go and LET GOD, the peace in my heart is incredible, people say they just don’t understand how strong I am. I am not strong, He that lives within me is stronger than anything else out there. He gives me such strength. I am loving school, I am starting a new job soon in Jesus name and my heart is resting in He who loves me, even with all that’s happening in my marriage. cue music.. Christ is my reward, And all of my devotion, Now there’s nothing in this world that could ever satisfy. Christ my all in all, the joy of my salvation, And this hope will never fail, Heaven is our home,

    Wow … yes, yes. Isn’t it strange that we have “branded” ourselves unequally yoked when we are EQUALLY yoked? Isn’t it incredible Dineen how the Lord just changes the way we think ever so slightly but flipping the branding around makes a very significant difference to how we both perceive ourselves but more importantly how we see Jesus. In some ways you’ve summed up with much better clarity what occurred for me in 2012 when meeting you – I’m equally yoked with Jesus and heck as a result have freedom to be everything He wants me to be.
    This idea of “Rest” has been on my mind these past few weeks. I’m always striving to know more and to better understand intimacy with Him, when all it requires is resting in Him. Just spend the time with Him, He’ll equip, He’ll provide, He’ll encourage, He’ll enable.
    Thank you Dineen – wonderful. Got a real spring in my step now.

    Oh, my sister. My heart breaks for your family. You sound strong and at peace. You can be strong and also grieve. Allow yourself to go through that process. Praise God he put Lita near you when you needed her. Praise Gid your children are mature and have had the benefit of your guidance. Who, but God, knows what adventures lay before you?

    Thanks Teresa! I am staying in Faith believing that all things are possible with God. I have told me kids they really need to press in with God now… They can’t lean on mom’s faith anymore. Like you said, they are old enough to begin building there own faith life. I must put my Trust in the Lord when it comes to my kids….afterall they are HIS too 🙂 Love you sis…thanks for you prayers!
