The Movie: NOAH

Well, I don’t know about you but this past few days I’ve been reading some reviews and reports about the movie, Noah, that opened on Friday. It’s fascinating to me…

Well, I don’t know about you but this past few days I’ve been reading some reviews and reports about the movie, Noah, that opened on Friday. It’s fascinating to me how many differing views there are from the Christian population alone. Honestly, I’ve been disappointed to read some of them. I will state here I haven’t yet watched the film but I’m sharing only my thoughts and perspective regarding all the hoopla! 

First, let me acknowledge that there are many who bristle that the movie is not a perfect depiction of scripture. It’s not even close as I understand. But I wonder why that gets so many people turned inside out. Many of the Christian fictions books we read by the millions also are filled with a large amount of creative license. But, that’s not what I want to consider today. 

For all of us who are married to Pre-believers, this movie may be the one movie our spouses will attend with us. I see this as an enormous opportunity to open up discussion about the real story with our spouse. This may be a chance to have an honest conversation, without fighting, about our faith. 

So, while the Christian community debate one another on this subject (which adds fuel to the atheists perspectives on Christians and our spouses, I might add), I wonder if we might have been given a gift to use to draw our faith and our spouse closer together? 

On Saturday I asked my husband if he would attend the film with me. 

“Why would I want to see that?” Ahem, yep, he’s blunt. *grin* 

I pray that some of us will give grace to the creators of the film and perhaps one spouse in our House of SUM will experience a stirring in his/her heart.

    I too have been listening to all the conversation about this movie from christians. I believe God can take this movie and use it for his glory. There have been so many movies over the years we have enjoyed that have taken creative license and filled in blanks where the scriptures don’t give details. MY husband really likes Russel Crowe. He is not a reader. So I believe God is using this movie as a conversation starter for a lot of unbelievers. Heres the thing. My husband is a pre-believer. This movie is a talking point not only for my husband but my family who are pre-believers. God is in control and can and will use everything for his glory.

    My husband would not go with me, so I saw it alone yesterday. It is science fiction. Some of the wrong people are on the arc, etc. It still gave my husband and I an opportunity to talk about it. He thinks the original Bible event is sci fi anyway. He shared how some people we know think I am nuts for my beliefs. He is embarrassed and wishes they would leave him out of the discussion. I told him that he can redirect any such questions or comments to me. I told him that I don’t live my life by the somewhat fickle standards of other people and that following Bible teaching has made me stronger and my life better.

    A fellow Sumite has seen this film and I hope she’ll share her take on it. After hearing what she experienced I decided I was definitely NOT going to attend but it still nags at me that I SHOULD GO because I need to “do this” with and for David who is willing to go. More so than ME now!? LOL!
    Genesis 50:20 comes to my Spirit in considering to attend this film.
    20 As far as I am concerned, God turned into good what you meant for evil, for he brought me to this high position I have today so that I could save the lives of many people.
    We will most definitely pick out the ways the Bible was changed and can express this to our prebelievers. What is Hollywood and what is REAL! (wink)
    Thank You Jesus for the wisdom You are growing in each of us as we continue in Your Word! Amen

    I too heard from a fellow Sumite that it was very far from the truth. In my opinion, taking someone to see it, then having to explain why it’s not the truth would cause more confusion for them. While I agree that no movie will get it all right, many will go, and many won’t have someone to explain it ot them, and they will think it is the truth, becasue many people do belive what they see on the big screen about christianity is truth. I believe it will only add fuel to the fire for the battle against christianity. I also think going to a movie in the hopes of opening up conversation to explain why it’s wrong and telling them the truth after is a bit manipulative. Again, that’s just my opinion.

    Lynette, I have been having the same thoughts as this. Seems like it could cause more confusion, and add fuel to the fire against Christianity. My pre-believer would certainly fall into that category. I haven’t decided if I want to see it or not based on all the comments I have heard about it, but “no, I wouldn’t invite him for the reasons you stated.”

    I think the first thing we need to point out is that the writers/directors of the movie may or may not be Jesus followers so in their eyes the Bible would be nothing more than fiction. Hollywood is known for taking wonderful works of literature and destroying them on the big screen, it happens in almost every time. So I think we need release our expectations in that area. Second, I see this as a wonderful conversation starter in my marriage and I can’t wait for our date night this weekend. My husband is a huge Russell Crowe fan and he’s been dying to see this. I plan to spend this week reading the actual account of Noah in the Bible and praying for God’s answers to my husband’s questions. I think that’s what the Sumite community is called to do in this situation (more than any other Christian subgroup).

    Lynn, my first thought is, how did you respond to your husbands response? Mine would have been because I asked you to….lol…. I agree with you on this though, even if the movie is not totally biblically accurate, it leaves room for discussion in a non threatening way. I remember when Joe went to the theaters to watch Courageous, he didn’t make a big deal of it, but we’ve watched it many times since then on DVD and he agrees it’s a great movie. Just sayin!

    I wasn’t too keen on seeing it because I believed it to be farther from The Truth than I would like it to be…however you never know how God is going to move in someone’s life. We can be there to answer questions (with short and simple answers)! Perhaps my prebeliever will want to see it all on his own when it comes to redbox! (I’m also interested in seeing God’s Not Dead….anyone else?)

    Ladies I saw this film, and while I am a VERY opened minded person who tries to find the up side in everything, and I try to find God in EVERYTHING, secular songs, tv shows etc. I just want to say If you are planing to take your pre-believer I highly suggest taking yourself first. I saw this movie inspite of all the nay sayers, thinking they were too crictical, that the nay sayers were all in that catagory of people who are against Christianity in film, I KNEW I would find something good in this film, that I would find Gods presence in it. WRONG!!!!!! I would have been ok with the usual embelishment here and there, but in my mind they re-wrote the story, it presented God in a VERY bad light. If I were a non believer this movie would have possibly kept me from God forever. What a dark and depressing film, Im regrettful I didnt take Gods nudge to walk out sooner like many did there, who also came with an open mind against the nay sayers, I’ve asked Gods forgiveness for that. I told myself to sit through the end to have a good prespective. I can honestly say I personally feel, satan felt the urgency with this film to derail and discredit all the good Christian films out “Son of God”, “God is Not Dead” etc. I have to wonder if there are those believers and non-believers who see this film first and decide all Christian films are alike, that fortunately wont happen for me, because I will continue to look for the good in everything, mabey the good part about me seeing this film is to warn others before they take their pre beliver to a possible extremely salvation damaging movie. Im so sorry to be a downer here but feel very strongly urged to warn my SUM community, I walked out feeling creepy and disgusted.so in closing be please be cautioned with seeing Noah, and if you still feel that this may be the movie for you and your guy, now that you were warned I urge you to see it for yourself before taking a vulnerable pre believer, because I believe this will only add to the list of fights of ” who wants a God like that”.

    It’s an interesting dichotomy. I think we as a community must consider our spouse and how he or she might perceive the movie. Praying you have a moment to share your heart with you husband my friend. Hugs, Lynn

    Hi girl,
    I hear what you are saying. I wouldn’t approach my spouse about attending the movie in a manipulative way. I wouldn’t feel right about taking him to anything that is faith based and surprising him with something he wasn’t expecting. I did that in our early years of marriage. Spiritual ambush is never a good idea. Love you.

    Completely get this, as I was on the same page, only now I have to say that this movie may very well be a tool for the enemy, not surprising though why would atheist producers make a movie using a story from the Bible, worth pondering sisters.

    Just felt obbligated to. I remember thinking while sitting in the theater WHEWWWWW! So glad I didn’t bring my hubby, thinking I would have found myself in an argument after defending my God 🙁

    I was thinking, David maybe might feel let down by your now not wanting to go with him to this movie, because he was so excited that you were going to go with him to the theater. Maybe you can offer say three other choices of movies you would be ok seeing, (for that movie date night he was excited about) if you got to choose the next one say “Gods not Dead”

    Im with you and had the samd feel about all these Christian sub groups, just don’t let the title fool you. Because this film is titled “Noah” does in no way mean it is a God driven project, the enemy is very tricky. I was led to this movie thinking “Oh I know it will be good, I’ll find God in it” never dawned on me how some things can be wrapped up in a pretty package. Im so thankful now that my husband wasnt with me. Now on to “Gods Not Dead” for me so excited to see this! 🙂

    I saw the movie. I believe the outrage is because that don’t say God… they say the creator, thought I was watching star trek. 😀 Anyway I went with my husband and he asked what I thought my reply was the it’s a fictional movie about a biblical person. It had more of a hobbit reference. Other believers that went with us were undone. I also replied to them it’s a fictional interpretation of a biblical event. I will leave it at that for those who wish to see the movie. But it’s worth the redbox rental not the movie price. God’s Not Dead it worth every penny….

    Hi Lynn, Hubby and I go to the movies on a regular basis, so we saw the previews. I had stated that it looked really good. This weekend we heard an ad for the movie and hubby said he’d go see it. I did tell him that it wasn’t accurate and he didn’t seem bothered by that fact. He said all movies are interpreted differently that the original story. So I’m hoping that one day soon, we’ll get to it. Life is crazy now-with packing, deciding to sell our home, trying to figure out how to stage it with everything packed already, etc. The list goes on and on.

    I will not go to see this movie either. Yesterday’s message in church reflected 1 John 2:15-18
    15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever
    And…..
    Romans 12:2
    2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.
    I think, Noah and Son of God are a great disguise for Satan. I will not be seeing either of these movies.
    Son of God, if it’s like The Bible series on History; which is what I’ve been told it is, too much is left out and changed. Be careful of wolves in sheep’s clothing!

    Mushroom/bacon pizza at Amore’s and a movie is our date night. We have not been in awhile so Noah probably will be the one we pick. I will enjoy seeing if I know my scripture well enough to know the differences and then to watch and see what my husband will say.
    I am trying not to read too many reviews. I find it running down the Christian legalistic slide and realize too, as has been said…their will be artistic (if that’s what it is really)license.
    It’s the movies!!! Hopefully it is at most decent entertainment! For me it is a date night. I am going with joy and Jesus in my heart as the Holy Spirit will help me be discerning.

    I got into a tense discussion on a blog with someone about this film so all I will say is, biblically accurate or not -typical Hollywood approach to most historic events), I hope to use this God given opportunity to see it with my non Christian husband as a springboard to have a good discussion about God.
    I get so few that when this came up with Mr Crowe, a fav actor of hubs, I am NOT going to miss it.

    I want to see “God’s Not Dead” too.
    I don’t mind Christian inspired fiction, like Narnia. If this is the plot they wanted to make, I wish they had fictionalized the names and even the planet and call it sci fi. I would have thought that building the ark and destroying most animal life for a new start of Earth was dramatic enough. Ha. I am not Hollywood material.

    Sometimes we are all to eager to get our guy to something such as this movie, and so want to share a “moment” with them, want to be “knowing this will make a difference” after seeing it myself and feeling the same way as we all did, hopeful and eager to watch a Bible story come to life. Sometimes its easy to miss the big picture as to our REAL motive, and are we, or is it worth the risk to make your guy have a very bad image of God and perhaps distroy any progress at all that you may have made with him?

    Bunny your motive sounds like your hubby wants to see a movie he likes and you want to go with to enjoy a movie with him, not referring to some one just wanting to see a flick with their hubby for entertainment sake, was referring to those like me who would have taken their husband hoping to inspire them to seek God etc, and to just be warned for those like myself that this movie may very possibly turn them away in the opposite direction. I would have loved it if my husband had said yes and went with me when I did go all alone last Fri, but after I saw it, was just thankful he didn’t accompany me. Im sorry if I came on so strong, I was one of those people who rolled my eyes when I heard the negative comments about the film and felt it was all hogwash but insisted I went, so I completely understand your thoughts as they were mine as well. I guess I get to protective over our community and just wanted to spare anyone from due heartache that may occur when they see our God in this way. Again sorry if I sounded i sulting or too pushy.

    Hi Lynn, yes I too was left with a discouraged heart. It was a Hollywood movie, great cinematography, etc. What message that was in there was vague and overshadowed by the drama. My daughter knew before hand that it wasn’t a true bible story, I had not heard that or read any reviews, so I assumed it was a true story. I guess I was hoping for much more realistic situations than it had. Colton Dixon said it best, “Another instance where the book is better than the movie”. Haha

    I have not seen the movie myself either so I am unable to give my opinion regarding the movie itself. Although I have read a few articles regarding the movie. I read one recently that was bashing the movie simply because the director is an atheist, out just to make a buck. I think we have forgotten that all throughout the Bible God used idolaters and people that were considered the worst of the worst to bring about His glory. Do we not think that is possible today?? I tend to agree with you Lynn, maybe the movie isn’t completely based on fact, but if the movie gets one person thinking about God and then ultimately to salvation it is worth it. Doesn’t our God take things that are meant for evil and turn them into good?

    Read through all the comments. One thing that kept nagging at me is some are saying ‘well, if it opens the door to salvation, who cares if its wrong.’ While no movie will have everything about Jesus or the bible correct, I think we need to be careful. How often are we warned about false teaching in the church? The bible says the devil is a liar and th father of lies. I am not comfortable promoting a lie just to seek truth. Should we go on sinning so grace can abound? (Rom 6;1) I don’t think something that is blatantly false should/will do that. I know if I took my husband, then explained how wrong Noah was, he would ask me “Then why did you see it?” (He knows my convictions when it comes to things like this). How would I answer? I really don’t know, becasue the answer I give would be with the following response- “Then how do you know for sure what you belive is truth?” Maybe you are wrong.” I truly believe for some, this will cause more trouble than truth. As far as Son of God…the movie would be a year long if they put everything in it. Even the bible says that if they recorded everything Jesus did the world could not contain the books. Leaving stuff out for the sake of time is much different than blatant lies.

    Hi! I am not married yet (after you read this I’m sure you’ll understand why I’m hesitant), but my significant other won’t talk about or listen to anything Bible related. He says I’m forcing it on our daughter, who is 15 months this week- but she will never again be as close to God than she is while she is so young and innocent. I want her to know Jesus, and while he doesn’t directly tell me he doesn’t agree with anything I believe in, his comments are still heartbreaking and do hurt. We don’t talk about anything religious, period- so I go to church alone with our daughter, and study alone while ignoring the “why are you reading that,” “I don’t want to hear that Bible thumping BS.” I’ve definitely had to practice patience, and learn to bite my tongue and silently pray for him (and for myself and to know what God would want me to do). -no, he wasn’t this way when we met, at least he wasn’t so forward and blunt with his opinions. Any who, I have yet to see the movie and I’m sure you could guess his response if I asked him to go. Maybe he will surprise me when I tell him about it! Thank you for sharing your stories, I find comfort in this site! 🙂

    I did take my PreBelieving husband with me Sunday afternoon to see the film, for the exact same reasons you shared. I had a choice between going to my Church’s night of prayer with my community group (alone), or sitting in a theater with my husband in the hopes that we could have a friendly discussion about the film and the Bible, even if it meant I had to bribe him with buttered popcorn. I REALLY want my husband to begin a relationship with the Creator, and the means he comes to Christ are less important to me than him just getting there:)

    Hi, My husband and I saw Noah on Saturday, and afterwards all my husband said was “So our whole purpose here is just to protect the animals?” “God doesn’t even care about us?” The movie portrayed it that way, and made Noah out to be a savage murderer who never had a relationship with God, and built the ark with the help of fallen angels… I explained the real story briefly but am not sure he listened.

    Just look at the number of responses to this post! We had a similar discussion last night at Bible study. Opening conversations about God, Jesus and the Bible can be difficult with our spouses, children, friends, neighbors…even strangers. However, I see it as simply amazing that at our local theater, “Son of God,” “God’s Not Dead,” and “Noah” are playing at the SAME TIME! Arguments on Noah are good on both sides, still…EVERYONE is talking about it. How about adding a challenge to see the other two movies, do a little research…like re-reading the story of Noah…and see where the conversation leads then? With the Holy Spirit guiding us…ALL things work together for our good! WooHoo!

    Yes also it showed Noah boarding boat with his 3 sons without wives as in Bible, in movie the 3 sons were aprox ages 9, 12, 18 and unmarried till after Shem impregnated a girl, who Noah said that if babies were a girl God wanted Noah to kill the baby, man was done and only animals to live on. ALL of which is not biblical. There was also a stow away who persuaded middle son in a sabtoage to kill his Father, Also not biblical. Too me these are much more than artisic liberties.

    I’m praying that not only did your husband listen but that he received the truth and now over the next several weeks God is going to use the visuals and the questions it brought out and your answers to release an unexpected hunger to know more. To know truth. To set your man on a path of discovery of the God of the Universe. In Jesus name. AMEN.

    Claudia,
    I will tell you that there are others in our community who are walking exactly where you are walking. Please allow me to be the voice of hope. It does get easier. You boldness will rise over the years as you become more secure in your faith and identity in Christ. And as your husband observes you living out your faith year after year, he will calm down. His hostility is actually his way of defending his own beliefs which are not even certain to himself. I would also ask you to pray for God to open up moments of conversation with your husband where you can ask him to respect your love and feelings and to not say things that hurt you such as I don’t want to hear that Bible thumping bs. and such.
    Also, begin to pray like crazy for your daughter. Pray that God would move your husband’s heart to see church as good moral training for your daughter. Pray, pray and pray some more.
    Read God’s Word every day and allow Him to protect you, love on you, and ask for the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation that you can know God better. Love you my friend. You are among friends who will walk this journey with you. Hugs. Lynn

    My hubby didn’t want to see it, if they are not singing “Oh My Darlin” or “Jeremiah Johnson”, he doesn’t want to hear about it, I tried and will continue to try. I did take my son and he seemed to enjoy it. He had a couple questions about the “fallen angels” and how they turned to stone but the movie explained that pretty well. Not word for word a biblical account but a very interesting and thought provoking account of The Flood.

    I think we want our pre believers to know the Truth. This is not much truth in Noah! To me it would be confusing to someone who is not familiar with the true story in the Bible to see this movie…how could they know what is truth and what is fiction. There are a lot of other wonderful movies to see from a Christian perspective. I would stay away from this Noah film myself and would not take an unbeliever.

    Have not seen movie yet so hard to give my opinion of it. What I do find very interesting is that this movies has only been out not even a week and it has already created such talk and controversy!! One thing for sure people are talking about the ‘Bible’ His precious love letter to us like never before and I cannot help but wonder if that will not stir curiosity in some. God is still in control and as stated above He causes all things to work together for good!!

    First off, I’m so happy I finally found y’all!! Where have you been this past 34 years? That’s right, I’ve been changing and growing and praying for miracles for my ore-believer husband! He has said he won’t go to this movie with me, but I believe in Gods plan and timing and will trust in Him alone! So…I wait to see if he changes his mind. Thank you for ALL you do for us SUM’s!
