Those of us who have been in a Sumite Marriage a long time realize we have gone through many stages along the way. Some may not be very pleasant. Many of these unpleasantries may make us cry out as David did, in Psalm 13:1-2, “How Long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?”

Years ago, when I was stuck in the persecution stage for my faith and loneliness and self-pity was taking its toll on me, I wrote a poem I would like to share with you today, entitled, “One Day.”

One Day

One day, I’ll never again have to bear the blunt of another dishonorable name,
One day, I’ll never again be ridiculed with shame.

One day, I’ll never again be judged and misunderstood,
One day, I’ll never again be pushed aside like a piece of wood.

One day, I’ll never again have to sit in a room all alone,
One day, I’ll never again be looked upon with disgust so plainly shone.

One day, I’ll never again have to go places with just me, myself, and I,
One day, I’ll never again have to eat a meal alone with tears in my eyes.

On second thought, One Day has already come, The Bible so plainly tells,
Of the day my Savior went to The Cross for me, and others as well.

It was the day that He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we were healed.  (Isaiah 53:5)

And so, if ever I should pity myself for man’s rejection & pain,
May I remember that because Christ suffered, peace is mine to gain.

May I also remember that Christ’s love can break through hearts filled with bitterness and hate,
After all, He visited my heart ONE DAY in that same miserable state.

Update: My husband’s walk with the Lord has not manifested as yet – he is still stuck in a couple of areas.  However, the stage of his persecution of my faith and my pity party stages have passed. He now supports me in my local Thrive in Faith Ministry and even allows group meetings in our home where God’s Word is taught, and Worship music can be heard from his “hideout room.”

Also, I am not high tech, so I call him my “tech man” when he has to sign me onto Zoom meetings with Lynn. Actually, he knows Lynn by name and what her website stands for. To God be the glory.

So, I encourage you to not let a current unpleasant stage pull you down but push forward into a new stage of healing. With God’s help, it, too, shall pass.
